Hygiene procedures for MassageThe techniques of performing a massage treatment are assessed by way of a written assessment workbook and practical demonstration of acquired skills and knowledge.This required introductory course provides professional training that a strong basis for working on family and friends, or those involved in sporting activities. This course provides a hands-on indication and taste of professional massage which can assist the Student in deciding whether the massage industry is for them.The course is the Massage I component of the Certificate IV in Massage Therapy Practice and conforms to government accreditation guidelines.

This subject is a four day course and been specifically structured for the massage industry and is a prerequisite for any Student wishing to undertake Supervised Clinic. The subject trains and provides experience to Students in a broader spectrum of massage techniques, which include, amongst other skills, invigoration and percussion techniques. As part of the training students are introduced to elements required for undertaking Supervised Clinical Practice which is required to be undertake at the Academy to satisfactorily achieve a qualification. On satisfactory completion of the course Students are expected to be capable of performing a full body massage to professional standards which incorporate the following elements:Muscular & skeletal anatomy
Causes and effects of muscular tension
Advanced massage techniques
Qi-Gong flow work
Preparation for Clinic
The use of thermo therapy.
Assessment is conducted by way of satisfactorily producing written assessments, satisfactory completion of workbooks, and satisfactorily demonstrating and implementing practical skills learnt.
CFA
Clinical First Aid

Pre-requisites: None
This subject is a two day course specifically tailored with the massage industry in mind. While taking Students through the requirements of a vital and prerequisite first aid course (HLTAID003 Provide First Aid) the course offered by the College has a focuses on common injuries that may be found or can occur within a massage clinical setting. The course is run at various times throughout the year dependant on numbers.
In special cases where Students have a current valid equivalent qualifications or for strong reasons are unable to attend the scheduled dates Students may, upon request, be provided with an option to complete this qualification through another Registered Training Organisations where the course meets the national accreditation requirements and the RTO is reputable and acceptable to NHA Australia.

Anatomy & Physiology 1

Anatomy and Physiology 1 is structured through an on-line access learning program and separate compulsory in class tutorials which cover the following areas that are more specific to massage therapists:-

Manage Health and Safety

This subject covers such topics as infection control, hazard identification and Risk assessment within a clinical practice. This course also focuses on the importance of health and safety as a therapist and the importance of setting yourself up correctly and safely.Assessment is done in the way of written assessment workbook and a portfolio of works.

This subject covers a broad range of business, management and marketing topics to raise awareness and teach skills practitioners require to work, or needs to be aware of, in meeting the requirements of running or working within a successful practice.

Students obtain practical real life skills and experience by providing massage treatments to Clients who are in the main from the general public. The Supervised Clinic allows Students to practice skills and techniques they have learned in Massage 1 and 2 and apply these to members of the public in an authentic massage clinic environment, while providing important and invaluable “hands on” time that enhances and expands the skills of the Student. These sessions allow Students to receive valuable feedback so as to improve their techniques and treatments. Further this element of training assists the Student on the path to obtaining their industry accreditation. Supervised Clinic is a required component of both the Certificate IV in Massage Therapy Practice and the Diploma of Remedial Massage each of which have specific Supervised Clinic hours requirements.

Supervised Student Clinic provides Students the opportunity to further practice the skills and techniques they have learned and to apply these skills to members of the public in an authentic massage clinic environment.
Students are taught to enhance their skills and achieve the required hours of Supervised Clinical practice while receiving valuable trainer and Client feedback allowing them to improve their treatments.
Supervised Clinic is a required component of both the Certificate IV in Massage Therapy Practice and the Diploma of Remedial Massage each of which have specific Supervised Clinic hours requirements.
Currently the hours a Student is engaged in Supervised Clinic at NHAA count towards the Student obtain their industry accreditation as fully competent and skilled practitioners.

Anatomy & Physiology 2

Pre-requisites: Anatomy and Physiology 1 and tutorials, Massage 1 and 2
Anatomy and Physiology 2 is structured as series of workshop tutorial sessions to enhance the knowledge obtained in Anatomy and Physiology 1 and to provide further knowledge and skills required to apply pathologies to clients as a practitioner.
The sessions are delivered by skilled industry practitioners who have detailed understanding of the common problems encountered in practice and have the knowledge and experience to make assessments and establish action plans.
The class tutorials cover the following areas which are more specific to massage and therapists:-
Apply a detailed understanding of anatomy to problem solving and service planning
Identify pathologies and changing pathologies through observations, physical assessments and analysis of information.
Identify the impact of interventions
Document action plans in line with organisation policies.

Structural Anatomy

Pre-requisites: Massage 1, Massage 2 and Anatomy and Physiology 1.
These workshops assist students in developing palpation skills, identifying bony landmarks, locating muscle groups, and identify and locate the origins and insertions of the body.
Further they provide the Student with the knowledge and skills to perform remedial massage musculoskeletal assessments.

Sports Massage 1.

Deep Tissue Sports Massage 1
Pre-requisites: Massage 1 & 2 and Structural Anatomy.
Sports Massage is a deep tissue massage which can assist an athlete to maintain a consistent, injury-free training program and or improve the athlete’s recovery time. Non athletes can also benefit from the knowledge and skills gained in this course as the course is remedially and therapeutically orientated.
The course sets the foundations for further study of soft tissue dysfunctions.
The techniques learned in Sports Massage 1 are used in conjunction with techniques and skills gained in Massage II to provide a deeper effect in clinical practice applications.

Trigger Point Therapy 1

Pre-requisites: Sport Massage 1 & Structural Anatomy
A trigger point is a hypersensitive area in a muscle that when compressed is locally tender and often related to referred pain.
Systematically working on these trigger points can effectively reduce pain and correct muscle spasm.
This remedial course teaches and trains the Student about trigger points their locations and pain patterns. The course focuses on common musculoskeletal disorders including neck and back problems.

Reflect and Refer provides knowledge and training in required core units to better or improve the Student’s professional practices and provide the skills necessary to engage with other health professionals.
